Arrest Made In Early Morning Santa Maria Attempted Carjacking

Suspect Found With Knife, High Capacity Assault Rifle Magazine, Drugs

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria police arrested an attempted carjacking suspect early Wednesday morning.

Authorities say 35-year-old Hector Lopez Nunez walked up to a car on the 800 block of West Blanche Court around 4:45 a.m. and hit the window demanding the driver get out of the car. When the person in the car did not exit the car, police say Nunez pulled out a knife and hit the window again. Nunez then walked away and the victim dialed 911.

Santa Maria police arrived in minutes and said Nunez tried to flee in another vehicle. The Santa Maria resident was taken into custody without incident. The victim was uninjured.

Officers found a knife, a high-capacity assault riffle magazine and drugs in Nunez's possession.

Nunez was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on attempted carjacking and other related charges.
