Santa Barbara, Calif. -

The Santa Barbara Police Department is working with the Coalition Against Gun Violence to hosting a gun buyback program this weekend.

At a press conference with community leaders, gun control advocates and Police Chief Cam Sanchez, the gun buyback program was announced with the hopes of removing firearms from city streets.

The program allows people to anonymously turn in unwanted hand guns, rifles, shotguns and ammunition and receive a gift card. A $100 gift card to Vons will be given for functioning handguns and a $200 card will be handed over for California classified assault weapons.

The event is Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the Earl Warren Showgrounds parking lot.

SBPD will only accept weapons that are unloaded and placed in the trunk of your vehicle until you arrive at the buyback program. No explosives will be accepted.
