23-year-old John Steven Danner has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder along with special allegations of using and firing a gun in the shooting death of Billy Don Law at the home they shared on Klau Mine Road in rural northern San Luis Obispo County about 20 miles west of Paso Robles.

Sheriff's Department investigators determined Danner shot Law, who was also his mother's boyfriend, after an argument in the home in the early morning hours of February 7th.

Danner then drove his mother to Twin Cities Community Hospital after she was hit by one of the bullets in the shooting and where Sheriff's Department investigators later arrested Danner..

In its incident report to the SLO County District Attorney's office, Sheriff's Department investigators said Danner originally told them he shot Law because he was scared Law would take the gun away from him and shoot him.

Investigators also reported during a follow-up interview with Danner that Danner admitted he shot Law because he was scared Law was coming at him despite Danner threatening to shoot him.

Danner then allegedly admitted he should not have shot Law during the incident.

The County Coroner says Law died from ten gunshot wounds.

Danner remains in San Luis Obispo County Jail with no bail allowed and is expected to return to court for a preliminary hearing next month.
