Search for missing kayaker is suspended

67-year-old fell out of kayak and into water

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - Latest:  The search for a missing kayaker has been called off pending further developments in the case.

On Sunday, 67-year-old Rene Monterrosa reportedly fell out of his kayak north of Morro Bay in the area of Cayucos.

The Coast Guard along with the SLO County Sheriff's Department, SLO County Fire Department, and Morro Bay Harbor Patrol searched approximately 40 square nautical miles before suspending search efforts, according to Coast Guard officials.

An acquaintance of Monterrosa had called the Coast Guard around 1 p.m. Sunday to report that he had fallen out of his kayak.

At this time Coast Guard officials are strongly urging boaters to wear life jackets while at sea.

The United States Coast Guard has taken over the search for a kayaker who may have disappeared in the ocean near Harmony Sunday afternoon.

Cal Fire engines responded to the 5000 block of Highway 1 near Harmony for a report of a missing kayaker. A kayak washed ashore with no one on board, leading to the investigation.

A Cal Fire Air Attack plane and a Coast Guard helicopter were called in to search for the missing person.

After two hours of searching the investigation was handed over to the Coast Guard and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

 

According to a Coast Guard press release, the missing kayaker is Rene Monterrosa, a 67-year-old man. An acquaintance told officials that Monterrosa had fallen out of his kayak and into the water.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, San Luis Obispo County Fire, and Morro Bay Harbor Patrol are assisting in the search.
