CA Budget Could Increase Preschool Seats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- - California's general fund spending package passed by the Legislature is headed to the governor. The state spending for 2014-14 year will be $156.4 billion.

The budget includes $264 million for expanding education before kindergarten. It would add 11,500 new preschool spots for low-income families.

Combined with existing programs the proposal would provide early education assistance to  around 234,000 children in the state.

Local educators don't know how much of that pie they will get but some are glad to hear about a focus in preschool education.

Debra Welch, the head start director in San Luis Obispo County said "It (preschool) saves money later on, on services like incarceration, teen pregnancy, drug exposure, and special needs  services because special needs children are identified early."

Welch said up to 2,000 students in the county are in need of preschool services but they're only able to reach about half of them.
