CAYUCOS, Calif. - The body of a kayaker that was missing for nearly two weeks washed ashore near Cayucos Saturday afternoon.
57-year-old Rene Baltazar Monterrosa's body was located at around 1:45 p.m.
The Santa Maria resident was reported missing on Oct. 8 after witnesses say he fell out of his kayak near Morro Bay.
The United States Coast Guard searched the waters for Monterrosa for over two hours before the search was suspended.
Family members tell KCOY that Monterrosa was an inexperienced kayaker. The father and grandfather was just beginning to learn how to kayak.
For Monterrosa's boss, Hector Paz, the discovery of 57-year-old Rene Monterrosa gives him some comfort.
Paz says the past two weeks have been full of worrying about what may have happened and what went wrong.
"It's a great feeling that I think he's back. I think it is a sense of relief.. I know it is for myself," Paz explained.
The two worked together at Paz's Premiere Auto Body Shop in Santa Maria for about five years.
"[He] was such a spectacular guy. [I] never heard him say any bad thing about any one person, you know always tried to work through the good and the bad," said Paz.
Now as he looks back on old photos and memories with Rene, Paz says one stands out.
"He was my oldest employee but the youngest one at heart. I have such great videos of him.. the one I have from the other day - it was raining outside and he went out there and he was down to his white t-shirt and just dancing in the rain I guess you could say; that's why we got along so good.. he had such a young heart - both of us did. He's gonna be well missed," Paz said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
No foul play is suspected. Authorities want to remind any water recreationists to wear life jackets.
