AVILA BEACH, Calif. - The pier at Avila beach remained closed on Sunday as crews took a look at how much damage the storm left behind.
Facilities crews were out taking a look at the Sunday morning. They said the pier was designed to break loose, so that it doesn't suffer structural damage.
Deck boards were pushed up from the waves, making it unsafe for beachgoers to get on the pier.
Steve McGrath, the harbor manager, said "We haven't seen anything quite this bad for a number of years but we'll see if we can get some part of the pier opened tomorrow (Monday). It'll depend on our materials inventory check."
Officials said to go into the water at your own risk. McGrath said although the swells have dropped there is still a possibility of rip tides coming in.
