Safety Work About To Begin At Deadly Intersection
Improvements include flashing lights, curb extension
Goleta neighbors complained about the dangers of walking across the street at Cathedral Oaks Road and Santa Marguerita Drive long before a car struck and killed a woman in November.
Shuguang Lui. 59. died and the 20-month-old boy she was pushing in a stroller was injured. The driver, 18, of Goleta was not charged.
Crews will begin making safety improvements Thursday. The $88,000 project will be funded by Measure A grants and transportation funds. Pedestrian Improvements on Cathedral Oaks Road at Santa Marguerita Drive will create minor delays, by closing a lane in each direction. Solar powered pedestrian activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be installed on Cathedral Oaks Road. They will be a visual cue to driver when a pedestrian intends to cross the street. A dedicated turn lane from westbound Cathedral Oaks Road to northbound Santa Marguerita Drive will be removed.
And curb extensions will be added to the north side of the intersection toward Cathedral Oaks Road to pedestrian a median area to wait.
The work is scheduled to take three weeks.
