SANTA BARBARA, Calif, -

Robert Redford did more than pick up the 2014 American Riviera award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last week.

Redford made time for a nonprofit he cares about. The Sundance Kid took part in a fundraiser for Return to Freedom.

Return to Freedom is a wild horse preservation and sanctuary in Lompoc.

The actor and activist joined about 40 supporters for lunch at the Biltmore Coral Casino.

Redford shared his fight to stop the horse slaughter industry in the U.S..

He called horses a symbol of America and freedom.  He equated hurting wild horses to being un-American.
