The California Public Utilities Commission is inviting the public to participate in the decision-making process to introduce a new area code that is currently under the umbrella of the 805.
The Utilities Commission is holding public meetings in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.
The 805 area code is expected to use up all available prefixes by June 2018, according to the Utilities Commission.
The Utilities Commission says they will introduce a new area code they're calling an "overlay." This "overlay" will provide additional prefixes and new telephone numbers for 805 customers. Additionally, it will allow current customers to keep their current phone numbers, including their area code.
The Utilities Commission will add the new area code to the 805 by June 2018 to avoid service disruption. Customers requesting new phone numbers may be assigned a new area code at that time, according to officials.
Residents are encouraged to attend the schedules meetings to express any concerns they may have. The meetings will be held at the following locations and dates:
- OXNARD: August 22, 2016 at 2 p.m. Oxnard City Council Chambers. 300 West 3rd Street.
- SANTA BARBARA: August 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. Eastside Branch Library-Martin Luther King Jr. Wing. 1102 E. Montecito Street.
- SAN LUIS OBISPO: August 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. SLO City Council Chambers. 990 Palm Street.
Anyone unable to attend the meeting may submit written comments to the California Public Utilities Commission Public Advisor's Office at 320 W. 4th Street Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90013.
Residents can also submit comments via email to email@example.com.
