SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Associated Press reports that former two-term California governor, George Deukmejian, known as "The Iron Duke," has died.
He was 89 years old.
California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement on the passing of George Deukmejian, who served as the 35th Governor of California between 1983 and 1991:
"I join all Californians in mourning the loss of a former Governor and public servant of unwavering integrity - George Deukmejian. He not only was a leader of principle, civility and strength - he was a powerful example for California's vibrant Armenian-American community. Jen and I offer our profound and sincerest condolences to his family, friends and former staff."
California Governor Jerry Brown issued the following statement:
"George Deukmejian was a popular governor and made friends across the political aisle. Anne and I join all Californians in expressing our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
In honor of George Deukmejian, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
The cause of death is unknown at this time.
