An Arizona detention officer is expected to undergo surgery after police say an inmate bit part of her ear off.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the officer was doing a routine cell search Monday afternoon when the inmate jumped on her back and tore part of her ear off with his teeth.
Bobby Ruiz, jailed on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, now faces additional charges of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, Phoenix TV station KPHO reported.
The officer, who has not been identified, was recently hired by the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio told KPHO he's ordered Ruiz to be locked down and allowed only bread and water.
