ISLA VISTA, Calif. -

Weekend parties turned violent in Isla Vista after a stabbing and a near-riot broke out on the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive.

The stabbing happened around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday after a fight broke out at a residence. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department says 18-year-old Kuriyan Summers-Dickinson of Lompoc stabbed a 20-year-old man in the stomach. Summers-Dickinson was arrested after a short foot pursuit. He's charged with attempted murder. The victim, from Rhode Island, is in stable condition at the hospital.

While deputies were investigating the stabbing, they spotted 20-year-old Otis Washington, a UCSB student, jumping and yelling on top of a car. Washington started running and deputies arrested him. Washington is charged with vehicle tampering and arrest.

During the arrest, a crowd gathered around deputies and Washington. The crowd started chanting and throwing bottles. Deputies called for back-up. A group of people and students surrounded officers to help hold back the hostile crowd, now estimated to be about 1,000 people. Additional deputies, UCSB police and the California Highway Patrol arrived soon after.

Law enforcement used pepper spray and batons to push back the crowd which dispersed after about an hour. During the melee, another UCSB student, 21-year-old Tomas Delaveau was arrested for spitting on an officer. He's charged with battery on a peace officer.
