VENTURA, Calif. -

A man was shot and killed Saturday after he allegedly attacked a Ventura County sheriff's deputy and tried to take her gun.

The man has been identified as Devon Thomas Costa, 21, of Simi Valley.

The sheriff's department said a witness saw the man attack the deputy and punch her in the face, nearly knocking her to the ground. The witness told investigators the man then tried to grab the gun and threatened to kill her.

The incident took place near Ventura Avenue and Fraser Lane.

A Ventura County sheriff's deputy was dispatched to a call of a man yelling in the street near Ventura Avenue and Shell Road, said Sgt. Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

After a struggle, the man was shot and the deputy received minor injuries.
