The new Allan Hancock College Public Safety Training Complex at the Lompoc Valley campus is ushering in a new era for the College's popular training programs.
AHC through its Public Safety Training Complex is offering accredited orientation and safety training for current and future oil and gas workers.
"This facility is very well suited, it compliments the kind of training that the oil and gas industry need, whether its combustible liquid training, whatever", says AHC Extended Campus Dean Rick Rantz, "we'll be working with our local Workforce Investment Board, our local one-stop here in Santa Maria to really serve unemployed and incumbent workers who want to move into the oil industry."
Last October, 36 year old Santa Maria native Roberto Garcia fell to his death while working on an oil rig along Cat Canyon Road near Los Alamos.
"We're working very closely with industry to identify their training needs and we're stepping up to meet those", Rantz says, "that industry has a need for safety training especially after some of the natural disasters, so the companies are taking training really seriously."
"They are really concerned that they have safe work sites, their personnel are safe on the workplace", Rantz says, "so we are really excited about helping them make sure they are able to reduce the injuries and the fatalities in the industry."
The oil and gas worker safety training is through a partnership with the Petroleum Education Council.
"We are the only community college in California that has partnered with the Petroleum Education Council for training here", Rantz says, "in fact they have given us the exclusive territory for their oil platform preparation training that we'll be serving the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and California."
