After community push back on a proposed site for a new California Highway Patrol facility in Goleta, a secondary site is in the running at The Earl Warren Showgrounds.

The Board of Directors meets on the plan today. It was first suggested in 2016.

The location on Calle Real is where a horse ring is currently located. It would be in a western corner of the property on the side facing Highway 101 by parking entrance C. It measures about four acres.

The current CHP facility is located on Calle Real near Los Carneros. It is more than 30 years old and outdated for the current staff and work load.

A suggested site on Hollister near the Sandpiper Golf Course was not received well by neighbors and ultimately it was not pursued.

The 19th Agricultural District operates the showgrounds. It has been favorable to hearing the project plan but the proposal is in the early stages. It will require a review of the appraisal, benefits to the district’s goals, and an approval from the State Department of General Services.

The facility recently had the Santa Barbara National Horse and Flower Show, The Old Spanish Days Stock Horse show and, Professional Bull Riding, the Santa Barbara Dog Show, and is scheduled for many annual events ahead including the Sea Glass Festival, and the Junior League Monster Rummage sale.
