Santa Barbara County released the following notice about plans to install new temporary fencing along the bluffs of Isla Vista. More coverage of this issue tonight on the evening newscasts.
Santa Barbara County announced today that temporary fencing will be installed along the Isla Vista bluffs as an added safety measure to help protect the welfare of the residents of Isla Vista and visitors to the community. The installation will begin the week of June 2.
The project was developed in consultation with UC Santa Barbara, residents of Isla Vista and safety advocates. UC Santa Barbara is fundraising and is providing the necessary funds for the installation of the temporary fence.
The temporary fences will be installed along the bluff edge at Santa Barbara County Parks and Isla Vista Recreation and Park District coastal parks in Isla Vista. The locations include Pelican Park, Window to the Sea, Sea Lookout Park, Walter Capps Park, the bluff top Open Spaces and the five beach access locations in Isla Vista. Beach access will remain open.
We are implementing this solution to protect the public’s welfare while planning continues toward the development of a permanent solution that will be both attractive and provide an improved level of safety for the public who frequent the Isla Vista bluffs. For everyone’s safety we recommend that people stay away from the bluff edge and respect this temporary solution while we continue to work to make the community safer.
