SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

A bike lane in Santa Maria is now open to cyclists.

Cal Trans said the bike lane was built next to the southbound lanes of Highway 101 at the Santa Maria River Bridges.

The lane was included as part of the nearly $35 million bridge widening project, which will allow cyclists to travel north and southbound across the Santa Maria River Bridges.

Stage three of the construction project includes work on the northbound lanes, it is in progress and the project is expected to be done early next year.
