SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Santa Barbara police officers are investigating a violent stabbing that took place in the downtown area Monday afternoon.

Police activity spanned four blocks near the intersection Chapala and Carrillo streets, where a trail of blood was spotted.  Sgt. Riley Harwood said, three suspects have been arrested.

At least one person suffered stab wounds in the back but refused to be transported to the hospital. He went to the police station for questioning.

The cause of the stabbing is under investigation, but police say it was gang related.

An eyewitness said, some of those involved ran through the parking area at the Canary hotel.

Suspects were caught on Canon Perdido St. near the Lobero Theater, and also on State and Carrillo downtown.

A woman and her baby were with one of the two men allegedly attacked. They were not hurt.

The crime scene and the pursuit went past many downtown shoppers and those attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
