'Mr. Indy 500' Andy Granatelli Remembered in Special Car Show Tribute
Winning 1973 car on display in Santa Barbara
As a tribute to the late auto racing icon Andy Granatelli, one of his former race cars from Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was displayed Sunday in Santa Barbara.
The 1973 winning car was driver by Gordon Johncock, and gave Granatelli his second Indy win. It is now owned by Montecito resident Craig McCaw.
Granatelli passed away last month in Santa Barbara's Cottage Hospital at the age of 90.
The Indy winning car was displayed at the weekly "Cars and Coffee" car show on Coast Village Road.
Many car buffs came out to see the famous vehicle and read Granatelli's story on special poster boards that were around the display.
Granatelli was known as a leader in motor sports in many areas including engine design, and promotions.
In Santa Barbara he was actively involved in philanthropy to benefit the arts, schools, law enforcement and fire agencies.
His family said it was Granatelli's request not to have a public memorial.
