It's that time of year again. The Monarch butterflies are back in Pismo Beach.

Carl Boatman is a volunteer at the Pismo State Butterfly Grove where he said there are over 30,000 butterflies flying around.

Even though 30,000 butterflies seems like a lot, experts say that it is a decrease from previous years. They say the decrease is caused by the lack of milkweed, which has decreased because of the drought and land development in places like Paso Robles.

As a result of the drought and land development, fewer butterflies have been returning to the grove.

Needless to say, volunteers like Boatman, say there is still something magical about walking through a sea of butterflies.
