Midnight Vandenberg test launch called "effective nuclear deterrent"

Minuteman III missile test from Vandenberg

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Just after midnight on Wednesday morning a test launch lit up the night sky over Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The 30th Space Wing sent up an unarmed Minuteman III. Base officials say the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile traveled four thousand miles to a test range in the Marshal Islands. By all accounts the launch was a success.

The data from Wednesday's launch is helping to ensure a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent, according to Vandenberg.

The launch, though common from VAFB, comes during a time when North Korea has threatened the United States with nuclear war. Vandenberg will be one of two bases in the U.S. to conduct a large-scale test in May, meant to be a sign to the North Korean Regime.
