SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer travel season and is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Travel experts say 35 million Americans will be hitting the roads or jumping on a plane during the holiday weekend.

Gas prices aren't stopping many from driving out of town.

In Santa Barbara County, the average price of regular unleaded is $4.09; that's down nearly 30 cents from last year. In San Luis Obispo County, the price tag is $4.11, in  Ventura County, it's $4.07.
