We’re learning that Austin Ross, 29, the masked man who was arrested in yesterday’s standoff with SWAT team members in San Luis Obispo has an extensive criminal history, including 3 other arrests in the last 2 months.
When Ross came out of the apartment wearing a mask and was arrested, it marked his 4th arrest of this year already. Back in March he was arrested for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and resisting a police officer.
Ross was then arrested in April for possession of a controlled substance.
Earlier this month, he was arrested again for taking a car without consent and reckless driving.
Yesterday, police were looking for Ross on an arrest warrant for a stolen car, firearm possession, and evading arrest. That led to the standoff, which caused the scary scene as students and neighbors watched it unfold.
Campus is just a few blocks away and some Cal Poly journalism students were right there when officers took Ross into custody.
"It was very adrenaline pumping," said Erica Husting, a Cal Poly senior. "I’d never seen that before, so it was definitely out of the ordinary."
The apartment that Ross was in was his girlfriend's, who police say is a Cal Poly student. She was not there at the time, but was notified of what happened.
Officers say Ross did not have any weapons on him at the time.
Ross is currently still in custody at the San Luis Obispo County Jail. His bail is set at $110,000. Superior Court administration says no date has been set yet for his arraignment.
