San Nicholas Seabirds

One of the Channel Islands that is part of Naval Base Ventura County hopes to welcome seabirds back.

For decades feral cats have preyed on birds on San Nicholas Island.

So the Navy partnered with the Humane Society and some wildlife agencies to remove 76 cats and kittens.

They took them to a shelter in San Diego County.

On Wednesday the Navy declared the island, about 60 miles offshore, "cat free."

They will be watching and waiting for the seabird population to make a comeback.
