Oxnard Tobacco Ordinance

Written by Tracy Lehr

A sting to stop Oxnard stores from selling cigarettes to minors may lead to the sale of tobacco licenses.

During a recent sting more than a quarter of the retail outlets sold tobacco to minors.

To reduce that number, Oxnard City Council members will consider charging businesses $69.00 for a license to sell tobacco, plus an annual fee.

Small business owners say they already face fines if they sell to children.

But some residents see it as a way to help young people avoid tobacco addiction.

The city will take up the issue at Tuesday's council meeting.
