Oxnard Hot Prowlers

Written by Tracy Lehr

Oxnard Police are trying to solve a dozen burglaries that they call "hot prowls."

Hots prowls happen when burglars enter homes while someone is at home.

They have been reported in a number of neighborhoods including Rio Lindo, Riverpark, South Winds, Channel Islands, Cal Gisler, Sierra Linda and Cypress.

Items stolen include computers, cell phones, small electronics, cash, jewelry and personal documents.

Police say the public should know the following:

* always lock doors and windows - 6 of these cases involved the suspect gaining access through UNLOCKED doors or windows

* call the police if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood

* if someone knocks on your door, look through the peephole. if you don't recognize the person DON'T OPEN THE DOOR. ask what they want through the door. This way the person at the door knows someone is home and is less likely to try and break in. Sometimes we see a pattern of suspects knocking on the door and if they don't get an answer they go around to the back of the residence. This hasn't happened in these current cases but we want people to be aware of this.

* if you hear someone removing a screen or trying to get into a window, yell "I am calling the police!!!!!" Or scream or turn on lights... in these cases the suspect leaves when he or she realizes someone is home.

* if someone does try and get into your home, call the police IMMEDIATELY. Don't call your friends or go to your Twitter page and post what happened. Call us first. then we have a better chance of catching the suspect.
