Montalvo Changes

Written by Tracy Lehr

An unincorporated area may soon become part of the city of Ventura.

Montalvo is a small neighborhood that is surrounded by Ventura, but it's actually Ventura County.

It's patrolled by the California Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's Department.

But that is likely to change if the agency that controls boundaries
allows Ventura to build a new housing development off Wells road.

If Ventura annexes that farmland the Local Agency Formation Commission known as LAFCO has some requirements.

Ventura would have to annex unincorporated islands or pockets within the city limits.

That means Montalvo would have to become part of Ventura.

Some residents are worried it would be costly.

But Ventura planners say their property taxes would stay the same and their water bills would drop.

Montalvo residents would also have a voice and a chance to run for city council.

The Planning Commission and Ventura City Council will take up the issue next month.

Then LAFCO will consider the changes in May.

A few months later Montalvo could be officially part of Ventura.
