The Special Olympics is mourning a local athlete.

Michael Russell became a Special Olympics champion golfer after suffering a brain tumor the size of a golf ball during college.

The tumor damaged Russell's vision and equilibrium.

The 49-year-old is survived by his mother and sisters including guitarist Theresa Russell.

A memorial will be held at the Channel Islands Yacht Club this Saturday.
