Bennett Changes Course

Written by Tracy Lehr

In November Supervisor Steve Bennett said he would not seek re-election because he intended to run for Congress and fight for the middle class.

Now he has changed his plan.

Bennett is dropping out of the race in the new 26th Congressional District and plans to run to keep his seat.

The former teacher and father of four says it was not a snap decision.

But Bennett says he realized that he could do more good locally and he had concerns about the candidates running to fill his seat.

The Open Primary also played a role.

The top two winners will face off regardless of party affiliation in November and that could make it more difficult to get to the general election.

Bennett says he's returning all of his campaign contributions and will pick up the tab for all the expenses.

Although a number of people have announced their intentions to run in both races, Registrar Mark Lunn told Key News that Chief Roper is the only candidate that has filed his paperwork.

Candidates have until March 9th to do so.
