Arrest in Strangulation Murder

Written by KEYT Reporter

Ventura - Ventura County's Major Crimes unit made an arrest in connection to the murder of a homeless mother found off our coast earlier this month and even more arrests are likely to follow.

Deputies arrested Kristina Canell, 28, transient from Oxnard, on suspicion of murder Wednesday afternoon. Canell has prior misdemeanor convictions.

The victim, Sarah Overholser, 32, died from asphyxia by strangulation.
She was found in the ocean when a pilot spotted her nude body floating in water just south of Mugu Rock on Nov. 7.

Overholser leaves behind a young son being raised by relatives.

She suffered from depression and tried to get help at the Rescue Mission's Lighthouse Shelter for Women and Children. Officials say she did not like the structure and left.

Detectives are looking for more leads. Anyone with information is urged to call major crimes at 805-477-7000.
