Ventura County Ag Had Another Berry Good Year

Ventura County crops raked in 1.6 billion dollars again this past year. Agriculture officials say that good in this economy.

And there are some newcomers in the 2009 top ten list:

1. Strawberries: $515 million
2. Nursery stock: $191 million
3. Celery: $169 million
4. Raspberries: $155 million
5. Lemons: $129 million
6. Tomatoes: $127 million
7. Peppers: $46 million
8. Avocados: $44 million
9. Cut flowers: $43 million
10. Cabbage: $20 million

Cabbage squeezed out Valencia Oranges to make the list.

Lemons, once at the top, are now number five.

Growers have been replacing citrus trees for more lucrative crops like raspberries.

Locals help nurseries by buying more do it yourself plants. Many people are saving money by growing their own fruits and vegetables.
