Lompoc - An operational test of the Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile successfully launched Wednesday morning.

The missile launched at 6:35 a.m. from north Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The missile's unarmed re-entry vehicle is expected to travel 4,200 miles to a target near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The 576 FLTS is responsible for the tracking, telemetry and command destruct systems on the missile, which collect data and ensure that safety requirements are met.
