Union Workers Upset at Pay Raise for County Official

Want their deal with cuts looked at again

Written by KEY News Staff

Union workers in Santa Barbara County want their latest contract, that included pay cuts and furlough days, to be looked at again. It was not warmly received in December and both the county and SEIU Local 721 were planning sessions this year to see if a different agreement can be reached. They are also concerned about the pay of $157,000 for the new Probation Department Chief Barbara Taylor. Her prior pay as the Deputy Chief was $115,000.

County Supervisor Janet Wolf says she would like to go back to the bargaining table and keep working at a contract for the union workers. SEIU Local 721 represents social workers, probation workers and others including child welfare employees. In all about 500 county workers are in this union.

One union leader said in addition to the pay cut, and furloughs, the sacrifice is just over 14 percent.
