Two Arrested In Child Abuse Probe

Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

Two Orcutt residents were arrested recently after deputies with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department served a search warrant at two homes in connection to a child abuse investigation.

71-year-old Bertha Mae Savoy and her nephew, Duane Patrick James were arrested in late June, and are accused of abusing foster children over a four year period.

Investigators say the two would force some of the children to sleep outside on concrete, denied food and water and may even have been beaten with plastic hangers.

James is also accused of threatening to kill the children if they did not behave Savoy.

Authorities say they have identified a total of 9 children, who may have been victims of the abuse.

Savoy and James are both facing felony charges of child abuse and several misdemeanors.
