Time Capsule Reveals Local History

Written by KEYT Anchor

Goleta - It has stood as a moment in time for close to fifty years and today that moment was shared with close to one hundred people at La Patera School.

The mid-1960's were the early years of La Patera School and during that era, students and teachers put together a time capsule and sealed it behind a wall on campus. Today, close to fifty years later, it was opened.

Close to 100 people were on hand to see what was inside, including about 30-40 alumni. Former students, brought their own kids, some of them now current elementary students.

Inside there were newspapers dated, May 19th, 1965, with headlines all about the war in Vietnam. There was also a School Directory of Santa Barbara County, but the biggest hit was a class list, that everyone had signed as first, second and third graders. Many people who attended today's gathering say they had basically forgotten about the time capsule until some students started to reconnect on Facebook.

To give a bit of context, in the mid-1960's, gas prices were not even close to three and four dollars a gallon. In fact, it was more like thirty to forty cents for a gallon of unleaded. Plus, Beatle-Mania was also in full swing.
