Supporters Rally Around Jail Tax, Opponents Speak Out

Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

Measure S will face voters this November. Today, Sheriff Bill Brown and others showed their support for the new sales tax initiative that would fund a new jail in Santa Maria.

As many public officials showed their support, others made it loud and clear that they are opposed to the tax hike.

Sheriff Brown says the new detention center will solve the county's overcrowded jail system. Which has been under court order since the mid-1980's, to relieve crowding.

If passed, the half-cent sales tax increase would fund the $80 million project.
