Support Grows For Tax Plan

Written by KEY News Staff

Sacramento - Governor Jerry Brown has found himself in a unique position. A growing majority of Californians support his plan to raise taxes.

This is the key finding of a recent statewide survey by the Public Policy Institute of California. The initiative would temporarily raise the state sales tax and the personal income taxes of wealthy Californians. The new revenue would save K-12 education from further cuts, but it does not mean any new money for state schools.

According to the PPIC, 68% of likely voters favor the proposal. 85% of Democrats, 65% of Independents and 53% of Republicans are likely to support the tax plan to save schools from deeper cuts.
