Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

Wednesday night around 8:00... the Santa Maria Police Department responded to the area of the 1100 block of Main Street on a report of an attempted rape.

Officers contacted the distraught female victim who advised that she was attacked by the suspect near a transient encampment at the southbound Highway 101 off ramp where it intersects with Main Street.

Officers responded to that area and were able to locate the suspect.

James Allen was taken into custody for the attempted rape charge.

During the course of the investigation it was revealed that the adult female victim was walking to a local area restaurant from her motel room.

As she was walking past the Highway 101 off ramp, she was suddenly attacked by the suspect.

Allen allegedly struck the victim and forcefully attempted to remove her clothing.

The victim was able to fight out of the attackers grasp and ran for help.

A witness called the police on her behalf, and officers quickly responded and took the suspect into custody before he could flee the area.

Allen is reportedly a transient from Santa Barbara.

He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for attempted rape and kidnapping charges.
