Santa Barbara County Attempts To Save Redevelopment Funds

Will take over some projects

Written by KEY News Staff

Santa Barbara - With sweeping changes taking place across the state when redevelopment agencies exist, Santa Barbara County is trying to save of the funding it can spend to upgrade blighted areas.

Improvements to areas such as Pardall Road in Isla Vista have been paid for with redevelopment funds.

The finished project included better streets, bike ways and landscaping, a look that is welcoming to the local businesses.

Santa Barbara County Supervisors have voted to become what's called the successor agency to their redevelopment agency.

The move was supported by those who have seen the funds at work.

"In my three years of residency in Isla Vista, I've seen the redevelopment agency do countless projects that are really just increasing the value of our community; the Little Acorn Park improvement, the Pardall refurbishing, the Façade improvements at all the restaurants, all of which had really added to the value of our community," said UCSB External Vice President Tim Benson.

The state says it may also make further actions regarding redevelopment agencies in the next couple of months.
