Santa Barbara Co. Residents To Make Up McInerney Jury

Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

A judge ruled on Monday, that potential jurors for the trial of an Oxnard teen accused of shooting and killing his gay classmate, will be chosen from Santa Barbara County.

Defense attorneys for 16-year-old Brandon McInerney, who is accused of killing 15-year-old Larry King in February of 2008, argued in favor of changing the location of the teen's murder trial. They say it would be impossible to select an impartial jury because of the amount of media attention the case has garnered locally.

However, a judge denied their request but said jurors for the trial will be comprised of Santa Barbara County residents.

McInerney, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, is accused of gunning down King in a computer lab. Prosecutors say McInerney targeted King because of his sexual orientation. Attorney's for McInerney say he was the target of harassment by King, and should not be charged with first degree murder.

The case is due back in Ventura County Superior Court this Thursday.
