Update comes after triple fatal truck crash in 2010

Written by KEY News Staff

Since a horrible truck crash at the base of San Marcos Pass in August of 2010, there have been calls for a total ban on trucks using that road.

Today the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments received an update on highway improvements and enforcement efforts to make the drive safer. More work was also called for.

"CalTrans has made many improvement to the roadway itself to make it safer," said Santa Barbara County Supervisor Doreen Farr. "The paving, the rumble strips down the middle, the passing lanes, ...all very important."

Farr also pointed out the grants the California Highway Patrol has received to conduct truck inspections. Some of the vehicles that have gone through those check points had violations that required them to be parked due to safety concerns.

"The ultimate goal is public safety. So what ever improves the driving experience is what we're after," said Gregg Hart with the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.

There is also educational efforts that will continue for the every day driver, along with truckers. "to let people know to drive safely," said Hart.
