"Rigs to Reef" Controversy

Written by Jim Bunner

Santa Barbara - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to sign legislation to partially dismantle dozens of offshore oil rigs once they are decommissioned.
. The process of decommissioning those platforms will take place over the next five years, and while the original plan called for a complete dismantling, that could change if AB 2053 is signed.
Linda Krop, with the Environmental Defense Council, tells KEY News she opposed the legislation and is concerned that a precedent
could be set that would allow other industries to use the ocean as a dumping ground.
. KEY News reporter Mike Defina has more in this online report:

Background:
While opposed by some there are those who support the legislation saying the platforms add to the fish population and serve as an eco-environment.
. The bill is also favored by recreational fishermen who believe it will help provide a habitat for a number of California’s at-risk fish populations. If the bill is signed into law, decommissioning will begin in 2015.
