Parking Meter Madness

Written by KEYT Reporter

The meter is running on an effort to get ride of 318 new parking meters in Ventura.

Parking meter opponents are collecting signatures to put a meter measure on the November ballot.

They have until May 13th to turn in 6300 registered voters signatures.

Organizers say they only need about 100 more.

But not everyone wants to see it on the ballot.

The measure's co-author, Carla Bonney said, "My goal is to get it on ballot and I know that people are going to vote to remove the meters and keep the city council and government from being a little over bearing in the fees they charge."

Celtic Carma Salon owner and Meter Supporter, Patrick Mullins said, " The truth is they are not bad for my business they're good. Clients can park right there because merchants can't park there."

He says he meters revenue is being used keep the downtown area clean and safe.

If the meter measures passes by a simple majority that money would dry up because the meters would be taken out.

Older pay parking would be grand-fathered in and future fee parking would need voter approval.
