Man Arrested For Alleged Rape In Elevator

Written by KEY News Staff

Santa Barbara - A man who allegedly raped an unconscious woman in a Santa Barbara elevator has been arrested by police after a complex investigation that started with help from a city worker.

The city worker's job is to review images captured by an elevator camera. When he saw the suspected rape, police were called and an image of the attack was sent to the officers.

The suspect, Anthony Vasquez, 19, was identified and later arrested in a downtown park.

"The photographs depict the suspect bringing the victim, who appears to be unconscious, into the elevator and assaulting her over the course of approximately an hour and then leaving," said Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Riley Harwood. "[The pictures also] depict the victim remaining on the floor for another three and a half hours."

Police say the victim was found after an interview with the suspect. They also say if the city worker had not carefully reviewed the elevator pictures, the crime would not have been brought to police because the victim did not report the assault.
