Lompoc Pit Bull Sanctuary Able To Continue Mission

Written by Mike DeFina

Lompoc -- Since 2009 Shadow's Fund has been rehabilitating and finding homes for an animal that's both over-bred and misunderstood, the pit bull.

The non-profit group runs the Sheltering Oaks Sanctuary on a 100-acre ranch property in Lompoc and currently has about two dozen dogs in its care with another 20 in foster homes.

Shadow's Fund was recently facing eviction and was forced to come with $100,000 in just one week as a down payment on the property. The group was able to raise $40,000 and it was Chrissie's Fund, a Santa Barbara non-profit group who came up with the remaining $60,000 in the form of a loan to keep the sanctuary in place.

The organization's co-founder Cody Rackley told Key News the original focus of the shelter was not on pit bulls, however after seeing the compassion and loyalty of a breed that is often portrayed as vicious, the choice to focus on pit bulls was easy.

Shadow's Fund will continue to raise funds to secure the site and donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1472, Lompoc, CA. You can also visit the organization's website at shadowsfund.org for more information.
