Juveniles Forced to Work In Pot Fields

Written by KEYT Reporter

Ventura County Sheriff's Deputies are running into juveniles at illegal marijuana plantations.

They arrested a 16 year old in the Los Padres National Forest near Fillmore who told investigators that he was working off the fees for coming across the border. Often these teens are smuggled into the U.S. by Mexican Drug Cartels then forced to work in the pot fields to pay off their debt.

Soroptimists International of Oxnard launched an awareness campaign about human trafficking last year. Members are appalled by the use of children.

The teen from Mexico is being held at the juvenile justice center in Oxnard. Undercover narcotics agents say hikers should be aware that some pot gardens have armed guards and traps.
