SB Jury Awards Woman Nearly a Half Million Dollars For Being Fired

Written by KEYT Assignment Desk

Jurors ruled a former Santa Barbara County administrator should receive $431,000 for emotional distress and loss of past and future wages.

Heidi Garcia said she was demoted, then fired, for complaining about her boss.

Garcia was the assistant director of the Santa Barbara County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services.

She complained that her supervisor had discriminated against her because she was a Jewish woman.

According to reports, Garcia filed hostile workplace complaints and alleged the county failed to investigate and then demoted her in May 2007.

She was fired her two months later.

Jurors agreed there was retaliation because of her gender and a conflict of interest complaint.
