Hazmat Spill Causes Highway Traffic

Written by KEYT Producer

A Hazmat spill on Highway 101 backed up traffic for miles Saturday afternoon.

It happened just after 2:30 pm in the northbound lanes, just north of El Capitan State Beach.

Santa Barbara County fire officials say a tire blew on a big rig and flew straight into the center divider.

the accident ruptured a 40 to 50 gallon side fuel tank attached to the big rig, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the highway.

Caltrans crews closed one lane of traffic to clean up the mess.

No one was injured.
