Grace Period Being Considered

Written by KEYT Anchor

Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez tells KEY News, a 20-minute grace period before a car is towed away from a traffic checkpoint could become local policy.

In some California city's, including San Francisco, people stopped for driving without a license are given 20 minutes to locate a licensed friend or relative to drive the car away. It's a policy now up for consideration locally.

It's a move that comes in wake of a recently released report produced for the Pueblo Community Group in Santa Barbara that represents low-income residents. It found some of Santa Barbara's finest may have been targeting illegal immigrants for traffic stops and impounding their cars for driving without a license.

Chief Sanchez vehemently denies the allegations and tells KEY News some of his officers allow some grace time even though it's not currently department policy.

Chief Sanchez also says most local traffic checkpoints are established in various, high accident prone areas and adds that it's not unusual to see police net more licensed-related vehicle impounds than DUI's.
